As a Guest English Teacher, you will not be the only teacher in the classroom. Rather, a Korean Co-teacher will accompany you. The Korean Co-teacher is a licensed teacher who will act as your supervisor during the duration of your contract. Be sure to talk with your co-teacher about the dynamic you would like to have with them in the classroom before the first day of class.
You may have more than one co-teacher, but you will always have a main co-teacher who is primarily responsible for you.
Classwork
As a GET, you are required to teach 22 total hours. How the 22 hours are allocated is up to your school. After 22 hours, you are entitled to overtime pay of ₩20,000 per hour.
Class Hours
Elementary – 40 min per class
Middle – 45 min per class
High – 50 min per class
Class (Number of students)
This will vary widely, depending on the school and location. Classes will commonly range from 25-35 students.
Korean Education System and School-age
Elementary : Grades 1–6 (6–12 yearsold)
Middle : Grades 7–9 (12–15 yearsold)
High : Grades 10–12 (15–18 yearsold)
Vacation
You have 26 vacation days (not including weekends), 13 for use during the summer and 13 for use during the winter. You must use your vacation days in accordance with your school's schedule. You must get permission from your school to take a vacation, and it can only be taken when school is not in session.
Note, when school is not in session (i.e. winter, summer break), you will have to teach English camps (~2 weeks in the summer & 2 weeks in the winter), so make sure you know the camp dates before planning anything.
Administrative Office (Heng-Jung-Shil)
The administration office is responsible for the finances of your school. Anything related to finance, paychecks, housing, etc., will be taken care of by them, NOT your co-teacher.
